Tired of Summer Print
Written by Webmaster
I’m tired of summer and honestly, I shouldn’t be complaining. This has been the coolest and wettest summer for East Texas in decades. It hasn’t really been “cool” but in comparison to our normal blistering hot summers, it’s been nice. However, it’s August now and the non-stop rain we’ve had for months seems to be winding down and the daily rain chances diminish and the heat and humidity go higher. Either way, it is hard to complain because we’ve been blessed so far. I still get tired of summer, it’s too hot to enjoy doing much outside, there’s no hunting and the woods are unbearable because of the mosquitoes, snakes, ticks and chiggers and heat. But there is mowing the grass, plenty of it. And we all know how much fun that is. Thankfully Fall will be here in a couple months and it gives me something to look forward to. Actually getting involved with the Appleby Fire Dept. has given me something to do and actually look forward to every week. Amanda and I have also made a lot of great new friends. Speaking of the fire dept., after several months of being around the dept. and some serious consideration, I talked to the chief a few weeks ago and told him that I’m willing to move over from a support only role to firefighting duty. I want to remain the photographer first, because that is a passion of mine and I’m having a blast taking photos. However, I often have a lot of free time during the day and for obvious reasons, daytime calls usually have less firemen available to respond. I’ve been to a few calls where another set of hands would have been helpful and I’m standing there with a camera doing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I feel my photographs are important and appreciated but there have been and will be times when photography is unimportant compared to the emergency at hand. I’m also a very inquisitive type of person who likes to know “what” is happening and then “why”. I learn things by hands on experience so this will be another interesting learning experience for me. I’m also in the process of building the fire department a new website from the ground up, which will serve as an outlet for me to post many of the photos that I take on calls, as well as at training and around the station. As soon as it is ready for the general public I will post the link here. Enough for now, until next time, take care! - Jason
