Rain and Then More Rain Print
Written by Webmaster
There hasn't been much going on recently and I haven't taken the time to post any updates, because it's been pretty slow around here. I know some parts of the US are hot and dry but we are hot and WET. As of today, it hasn't rained for about 72 hours here and that is the longest we've gone without rain in a very long time. I don't think we've gone a week without rain since early May. Today was very humid with a heat index of 105. The air was so humid and heavy, just stepping outside would get the sweat rolling.

Like I said there isn't a whole lot going on. A few weeks ago, Amanda and I went over to Tunica, MS to celebrate our 8th anniversary. We had a great trip and played a whole lot of poker. The best part was the fact that it was a super cheap trip. We booked the poker room rate at the Gold Strike Casino & Hotel which was $30/weeknights and $50/weekends. They comped every single meal we ate, so the only money we spent on the whole trip was the cheap room bill and our gas. You can't beat that for 5 nights away from home. The poker action was great and I made a decent profit for the trip. You can't ask for much more. I just wish Tunica was a few hours closer.

As far as I know, the highway widening project in front of our house is still on go and Appleby Gas Co. has hired sub-contractors to bore all new gas lines up and down the highway. Right now they have huge holes dug in everyone's yards and the boring crew doesn't mind tearing up as many yards as possible in the process. I'm still sick over the whole widening project but there are several people within the city still negotiating with TxDOT. There are a couple historic buildings and houses that will be damaged in the process and the owners are doing all they can, along with the City of Appleby to get the project put on hold. I still can't believe they want to spend $2.1 million to widen a highway through a tiny community where the speed limit is 40 mph. But then again, they didn't ask me.

Everything has been going good with the Appleby Fire Dept. Things have been very slow for the last month or two, but things picked up over the last 24 hours, with us getting paged out 3 times. There was a wreck yesterday afternoon, then last night there was a (false) fire alarm at 1:30 am. Then this morning we were paged out at 6:45 am to back up Central Heights at a mobile home fire. It ended up being a total loss but was well beyond saving by the time anyone was on the scene.

Pretty boring update I know, but that is what has been going on around here recently. I hope everyone is having a good summer. I'm just counting down the days until October!
