Back from Tunica, Mississippi Print
Written by Webmaster
I just returned from a three night stay in Tunica, Mississippi where I went with a buddy for a quick poker road trip. As some of you may know, I play poker as a hobby and a way to get my competitive urges met since I am not a sports guy. Anyway, this was a last minute, unplanned trip for me. My buddy had planned the trip for himself and his wife was also going to go but at the last minute she started feeling sick and decided he should go without her. He called me and offered to pay for all the gas and the hotel if I’d ride along with him; the poker room manager had also confirmed that all our meals would be comped. Soooo, the only expense I would have would be my poker money and tips? Considering I have a set aside poker bankroll I’ve built up to play from, this was a no brainer.

We had a room booked through the Horseshoe poker room rate for $30/night and because of availability at the ‘Shoe they put us in the Grand’s Veranda hotel, which is also owned by the parent company Harrah’s. The room was nothing fancy but very nice and definitely worth a lot more $30/night! If you’ve never been to the Tunica area it’s kind of hard to imagine what it looks like there. Mississippi river bottom farm land, cotton fields on both sides of the road, very few trees, no stores, one gas station, no malls, no fast food restaurants and then there are these huge casinos and hotels sitting there next to gorgeous golf courses and lakes. It’s actually sort of bizarre how desolate the immediate area is considering the thousands of people that are there at any one time visiting the golf courses and casinos.

We were there for three nights, 66 hours total and my poker log shows that we played cards for 31 hours of that time. So it’s safe to say we played plenty of poker and had a great time. Also, we stopped for a quick bite to eat on the way there Wednesday and on the way home Saturday and other than those two meals, I did not spend a single dollar on a meal. Every meal was comped, whether we ate in the buffet or at the snack bar type restaurant. You can’t beat that for a couple poor Texas boys playing low limit poker.

We played mostly in the Horseshoe’s poker room but we also made a couple trips over next door to the Gold Strike and played a few hours there also. Lots of action at both rooms with plenty of tables going 24 hours a day. Anyway, we had such a good time and were treated so well that Amanda and I are planning a trip back there this summer. It should be a fun/cheap getaway. I’ll make sure to post a report after from that trip also.
