If everything goes as planned we will be heading north towards Oklahoma at about 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. Andrew and I are making our annual trek to NW Oklahoma once again in our quest for big whitetails. We’ve got my truck loaded down with so much stuff I think we could stay there a month. That being said, I’m sure we will find something we forgot once we get there. The rifle season opens Saturday morning and we plan on being there ready to roll. Changing gears a little, on a different note, there is some good news from the Nacogdoches Co. home front. A couple weeks ago my brother managed to kill the non-typical buck that we nicknamed “the reindeer buck”. He was just as freaky in person as the trail camera photos indicated. He was truly an odd deer and when cleaning him, we found no indication of past wounds of any sort that might have caused his truly odd set of antlers. On an even more exciting note, my youngest nephew killed the big slick 10 pt that I’ve gotten so many photos of over the last few years. This was not the buck with the split G-2’s but the buck with the nice clean and wide rack. He scored 128 B&C and needless to say my nephew is very happy. The buck is on his way to the taxidermist to be shoulder mounted. This deer was just a great mature East Texas buck and the kind of deer that hope we can consistently keep growing. Had we not had another year of drought, there is no telling what that buck might have scored this fall. Either way he’s a great mature deer and one that any of us would be proud to kill on our place. I’ll try to get some photos uploaded soon of my nephew and the buck. Until then, he and the reindeer buck can both bee seen in this seasons album in the Photo Gallery. So, everyone is killing bucks but me…again. Ha! This season has been a strange one as far as deer sightings, patterns, the rut, etc for us. I’ve heard much better reports from other parts of the county but I’ve also talked to several people who seem to have the same feelings we do this year. I’ve waited long enough and now it is time to start killing does. We are in Texas’ LAMPS program which stands for Landowner Assisted Management Permitting System. Basically the state evaluates our property and then issues extra doe permits that can be used all season by any hunter on the property the permits were issued for. We received 7 permits this year and I hope to use them all. It would definitely help our deer herd out and we’ve been doing this for many years now. Well, it’s time for me to go back over my long list of stuff to pack and make sure it’s all in my bags in the truck. The weather looks great for the days we’ll be hunting up there, highs in the 50’s and low 60’s with lows down to the high 20’s. Hopefully the rut will be kicking in like we think it is and maybe we can see some good chasing action. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. We are excited and it should be a fun trip as usual. - Jason
