September 7, 2006
It’s a few days past Labor Day and “The Change” is coming. Every year in late August and early September I start noticing The Change.
Even when the temps are still 100+ every day, I start to see and feel The Change. I first notice that the morning and afternoon sky begins to look a little different. The sky seems loose a little of that hot white look and takes on a darker more vibrant blue color. Also, the angle of the sun seems to be a little different and the mornings and evenings just being to have that fall “look”. Also that famous East Texas humidity seems to subside just a little, the dew points drop some and in the evenings there will be a nice soft breeze blowing. Don’t get me wrong, even with those changes showing up, it is still hot but any drop in temperature, humidity, and the occurrence of a slight breeze is a huge improvement from the miserable summer months we’ve endured.
Those changes have already started this year and we’ve actually been lucky enough to have experienced a couple small fronts move thru the area which has lowered our high temperatures down to the upper 80’s and our lows down to the mid 60’s. I love it! However, these fronts are usually short lived and the heat creeps back in until another front pushes is out again. This year will be no different, but at least we know that cool air is on the way and Fall is coming with it.
Every year about this time I start getting into the hunting mood. If you read my Hunting Blog entry titled “Summer 2006.….It’s Hot” then you’ll know that a month ago I was not getting in the hunting mood yet. But as the first slight cool spell rolls in I start getting that feeling and there is one event that always determines when I am officially in the “hunting mood”. That event happened last night. I started shooting my bow. Yep, it’s official. I’ve got my trail cameras out of the closet and I’m going to be checking them out and making sure everything is in working order and ready for 4 months of heavy use in the woods. My buddy Andrew and I have already been planning and setting dates on the calendar for our annual Oklahoma hunting trips and just this morning he e-mailed me some trail camera photos he got last night of a very nice East Texas buck. I’m starting to get more and more excited about hunting season.
It won’t be long and October will be upon us as Fall officially rolls in and hopefully the cool Northerners will come with it. We’ve gotten a small taste of fall over the last couple weeks and I can’t wait for more. It’s official, The Change is coming.
